A flex pipe is the braided flexible section near the front of the exhaust. It exists so the exhaust can move with the engine without cracking. It fails because it takes constant heat cycling and engine movement, and when it splits you usually hear a loud ticking or roaring from the front of the vehicle, sometimes with exhaust smell in the cabin. We replace flex pipes. If you are smelling exhaust inside the car, do not wait on it.
